Lausanne — The International Olympic Committee announced Wednesday that it has selected a host city for the 2036 Summer Olympic Games, capping a bidding process that drew interest from cities on four continents and ran for nearly three years.
The winning bid emphasised reuse of existing venues, with organisers pledging that more than 80 percent of competition sites will be temporary or already built, a response to years of criticism over the environmental and financial cost of Olympic construction. The bid also included a compact athlete village built adjacent to the city's public transit network.
IOC President Kirsty Coventry called the selection "a model for what the Games can look like in an era of climate accountability." Preparations will now shift to venue confirmation and sponsorship negotiations, with test events scheduled to begin in 2033.
