Kathmandu — The Nepal Army in partnership with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority launched the country's largest-ever landslide early-warning network on Friday, comprising 380 automated sensors installed across eleven high-risk districts in the mid-hills and Terai belt.
Each sensor unit measures soil moisture saturation, ground vibration, and rainfall intensity. When readings cross preset danger thresholds the system sends automated SMS alerts to local ward offices, as well as push notifications through the NDRRMA's public app. Community wardens in each village will be trained to interpret alerts and lead evacuations.
The initiative follows the Jure landslide of 2014 and the deadly 2023 Jajarkot earthquake, both of which underscored gaps in community-level early warning. Officials said the system should be fully operational before the 2027 pre-monsoon season.
