Kathmandu — Nepal's electricity exports to India crossed the symbolic 1,000-megawatt threshold for the first time in history last week, according to figures from the Nepal Electricity Authority, marking a significant shift in the country's energy trade balance.
The milestone was driven by the full commissioning of the 456-MW Upper Tamakoshi plant and the 216-MW Trishuli-3A project. Both feed directly into cross-border transmission lines under the long-term power-trade agreement signed with India in 2014.
The NEA expects export revenues to reach Rs 18 billion ($135 million) by the end of the fiscal year. Energy economists say Nepal could realistically become a net electricity exporter to Bangladesh as well within three years, provided planned transmission infrastructure is built on schedule.
